Half-Life's silent hero Gordon Freeman bears more than a passing resemblance to Eric Clapton…

An obvious choice, perhaps: Rhona Mitra was an official Lara Croft lookalike, after all - though it's a tough call between her and Angelina Jolie of the Tomb Raider flicks.

Sam Fisher of the Splinter Cell games is a dead ringer for George Clooney in the right light (and the right camo gear).

Two blonds fond of archery and green clothing: it's Legolas rather than Orlando Bloom who resembles Link, to be fair...

Joanna Dark of the Perfect Dark games might well have been inspired by Milla Jovovich as Leeloo in the Fifth Element.

Andrew Sachs (Manuel of Fawlty Towers, that is) could pass for Mario at a pinch.

Max Payne has a touch of Michael Madsen about him. It remains to be seen whether Mark "Marky Mark" Wahlberg will do quite as well in the title role of the upcoming Max Payne movie.

"With the OXM review hitting streets today, and your own preview impressions which are looking great, hopefully you'll all be a bit wiser as to the ins and outs of GTA IV now.

I'm sure you've all seen the chatter from the 1up GTA IV Preview on the PS3 install time....just a few thoughts on what you could do in this time if you were actually playing the 360 version from the moment you insert the disc....

Steal your first dozen or so cars and test out the improved vehicle handling?
Check out the cool features on your mobile phone?
Rack up a 5 Star Wanted Rating?
Have a blast of your first MP game on Xbox LIVE?
Ditch the tracksuit chic and buy some new clothes?
Unlock your first GTA IV Achievement and boost your Gamerscore?

....Or just start downloading a film from Xbox LIVE Video Store to watch later - check out the latest batch of arrivals this weekend!"

Microsoft have said "There will be no immediate or noticeable changes to the interface or services for Xbox Live or the Xbox 360." This follows after they released an update which will help the future growth of the Xbox. My guess is they are getting ready for the storm that is GTA IV.

An announcement from Take Two confirmed that Grand Theft Auto IV has "gone gold" with production in full swing.

Today also has its fair share of GTA IV perks. Lazlow Jones -- a lead writer, radio host, and long-time fan favourite who has been responsible for much of the dialogue and content found within most Grand Theft Auto titles -- appeared on the Opie and Anthony show earlier today to discuss his role in the development of Grand Theft Auto IV. While he touches on much of what we already know, he also goes into more detail on subjects that haven't received as much blatant coverage (including the downloadable content for Xbox and Rockstar North's inevitable "one month vacation" after GTA IV's release).

Here's a summary of some of the info that Lazlow covered on the show:

* There are over 100 radio commercials in the game.

* Announcements on the subway system will randomly alert you of spontaneous police harassment, security checks and searches.

* The faux-beer brand "Piswasser" takes a jab at Budweiser, including a radio commercial sung by Anthony himself.

* GTA IV's in-game internet is ridiculously extensive, featuring spoofs of liberal and conservative news sources with coverage of your in-game antics, as well as spoofs popular blogs and websites (craigslist, for example). Irritating pop-up banner ads also make an appearance.

* Niko can hook up with a wide range of girls via dating websites.

* Injuries mean much more in GTA IV. When Niko gets shot in the leg, for example, he'll begin to bleed and limp.

* Recording sessions for dialogue and in-game audio went on for ten hours a day, five days a week. The entire process took weeks to finish.

* Rockstar employees have been working overtime and well into the weekends to complete the game.

* Between the Xbox 360 version of the game and the PS3 version, Lazlow admits that he prefers the 360 version thanks to the downloadable content; new missions, new characters, new comedy, etc.

Releasing worldwide on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, the special edition of the post-apocalyptic RPG comes in a metal Vault-Tec lunch box and includes a five-inch Vault-Tec Vault Boy Bobblehead, a hardcover art book and making of DVD. And the game, obviously.

And that's exactly the details we had on Monday for what the Collector's Edition contains.

"We're very excited about this collector's edition and believe it truly offers gamers an amazing mix of unique items from the Fallout universe, combined with a great behind-the-scenes look at what goes into developing such an immense title," Vlatko Andonov, president of Bethesda has enthused.

The developer has yet to confirm a release date for Fallout 3, only saying that it'll be out this autumn.

We told you at that time that we’ll reveal further info on Microsoft’s plans for a next-generation controller, but since our insiders would be in jeopardy, we decided to wait until more info was public.

We are finally able to talk more about what we know after a patent application for a gyroscopic-based input device by Microsoft has been published on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Described as a “computer pointing device (generally a mouse but alternatively a game controller or remote control device) that may be worn on the hand and operated without needing to contact a (mousing) surface,” this patent was filed back in 2006.

We were told that the motion sensing controller that Microsoft was researching had the functionality of both the Nintendo Wii Remote and the Nunchuk packed into a single device, with a shape that is neither that of a banana, nor a remote controller, but more like a “pistol grip.” On top, it is supposed to have an analog stick (that could be replaced by a trackball) surrounded by the four action buttons.

We know that Microsoft has been doing R&D on this device (as well as next-generation vision-based recognition) for the past two years and that’s why (and not because we are teamplaystation) we reported this patent application by Sony:

As you can see, we were very surprised when we saw Sony’s patent as it looked similar to the Microsoft controller revealed to us. We couldn’t tell you about the Microsoft controller at that time, but we could certainly report Sony’s invention.

Personally I think its stupid and a waste of time to edit a game that is already aimed at adults, we are big enough to handle abit blood here and there.

The game will be released in North America on October 31 following the submission of a modified version of Manhunt 2. What's been cut we don't know yet. Nor do we know what the deal is in Europe but we're on at Rockstar to find out.

"Manhunt 2 is important to us, and we're glad it can finally be appreciated as a gaming experience," said Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games. "We love the horror genre. Manhunt 2 is a powerful piece of interactive story telling that is a unique video game experience. We think horror fans will love it."

Take Two chairman Strauss Zelnick, added, "Manhunt 2 is an extraordinary game, and we eagerly anticipate its release in North America."

Manhunt 2 is the debut title from the newly formed Rockstar London studio, which is developing the game in conjunction with series creator Rockstar North. The Wii version is being developed by Rockstar Toronto.

Along with the Mature rating, the ESRB also assigned the following content descriptors to Manhunt 2: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs.

Well, the big N have finaly taken over in console sales, the Nintendo Wii which has only been out for around 10 months has taken over Microsoft Xbox 360 which has been out for two years. The Playstation 3 is still in third position. Looks like Nintendo now dominate both handheld and regular consoles.

Good job Nintendo!

Released lastnight, EA's Skate for the Xbox 360 is pretty dam fun! the control system is tricky to get used to at first if you are used to Tony Hawkes. But after a few minutes its really easy to use and seems better!

The demo is out on Xbox Live, I just finished it and have to say it is pretty dam good, not short at all with lots of bad guys to shoot. Check it out if you haven't already, the game reminds me of Max Payne but with alot more interactive objects.

Check out this list of 6 cool things you can do, thanks to N4G.com

1. Don't stop after your first playthrough!

This demo, like Ninja Gaiden Sigma, rewards players who beat it multiple times. After the first play you'll unlock hard mode and the "barrage" power that allows you to slow down time and fire twice as fast, and the second time Hard Boiled difficulty and the "spin" attack that allows you to, well, spin around and kill everyone in the room. Each new attack lets you try new things in the demo, meaning you'll be getting an hour or two of playtime total. Very nice.

2. Shoot someone in the crotch, the hand, or just go for the face

Even in the first playthrough you'll get access to the precision aiming feature. Push up on the d-pad and slow down time, then aim at an enemy. You'll see the bullet leave the gun, travel through the air, and slam into the henchman wherever you aimed, and there are many different places to shoot people (with matching animations). It's graphic, disturbing, and if you aim for the ass, utterly hilarious.

3. Rack up those stars!

Depending on how you kill people, you'll earn stars. The more cinematic and cool, the more stars you'll get, and you can link moves together. My best score is 29 for running down a handrail, shooting above the heads of the enemies so neon signs dropped onto their heads, then diving onto a rolling cart, rolling across the rest of the scene on my belly while head-shotting everyone else. It was an epic scene, totally under my control, and better than most cut-scenes in other games. If you can get more stars in one combo, share your secret.

4. Bring the doves

It wouldn't be a John Woo production without doves, and when you load up your weapons and unleash the spin attack, you'll see doves fly out from... somewhere, and the music gets slow. It's a neat effect, and even better, the animation is created on the fly depending on where you are and where the enemies are located. You kill everyone in the room, and it looks fresh every time.

5. Barrage with the shotgun

Barrage mode, which you unlock in the single play, is great. You load up whatever weapon you're currently holding, time slows down, you shoot twice as fast, and you don't run out of bullets. This is fun with the handguns, but you haven't lived until you've barraged your way through a section of the demo with the shotgun. Everything explodes, everyone dies, and you basically rain liquid annihilation on everything you look at. It's truly an epic sight, and it puts the physics to the test. Luckily, I have yet to see this look anything short of incredible the few times I've done it.

6. It's time for a showdown!

At a few points in the demo, time will slow down and you'll be sent into a kind of face-off mode. You use the right analog stick to aim at the enemy and the left analog stick to dodge his slowed-down bullets. This allows you to masterfully kill a bunch of enemies who have the drop on you, and it's another way the developers keep the cinematic Hong Kong feel of John Woo without giving up interactivity. Since you control where to shoot and how to dodge, you can try many different things in each showdown.

Microsoft's special edition console will be landing sometime in September for $399.99 (195.99 GBP), and will include "an authentic Spartan green-and-gold finish," matching wireless controller, a 20GB hard drive, headset, a Play and Charge Kit, and "more" -- though we're not exactly sure what the latter may be. Get in line early folks, we've got all ideas this will be a fairly hot commodity.
Nintendo have dominated the handheld market for years and it looks like they may be working on a new motion sensing handheld. The patent was filed in March this year. The gameboy that they used to illustrate the motion sensing capabilities is most likely just a placeholder. Nintendo did have motion sensing for the gameboy advanced for Warioware the game, and thanks to hackers the Nintendo DS also has motion sensing.

Scotland on Sunday reports that the BBC's new media boss, Simon Nelson, who is set to deliver a festival keynote on August 14, will detail the corporation's plans to put a greater emphasis on games.

The BBC currently offers downloadable games linked to popular shows such as Doctor Who, as well as providing a limited amount of child-orientated games via its CBBC and Blast operations.

According the festival programme of events, Nelson, who introduced podcasting to the BBC, will reveal why the corporation has 'something to learn from games and how games will figure in the beeb's new media folio in the future'.

UPDATE: The BBC has responded to the report, telling CVG that the upcoming presentation will "not reveal a major move into the games industry".

Here's the statement in full:

'Simon Nelson Controller Portfolio & Multimedia, BBC Vision will be doing a keynote at the Edinburgh Interactive Games Festival. However, the focus of his speech is on what the BBC can learn from the gaming industry (and vice versa). The presentation will not reveal a major move into the games industry and is in fact just reflective of the way in which various sectors of the entertainment industry are now converging and can learn from each others methods of working.'

I will be attending this years Edinburgh interactive festival and will bring you any news I can get.

More sad news, looks like Rockstar have confirmed the delay of GTA IV. Altho this is a shock to most I will stand behind them, if they feel it needs some more time then they should have it. After all there is plenty of good games comming this year!

I think this may be the first GTA title not to be released in December.

The company is targeting its second quarter of next fiscal year, allowing for a release sometime between February 1 and April 30. In a conference call with investors, a Take-Two executive narrowed that down, saying, "Putting 'GTA IV' out in the Easter season isn't the worst thing in the world."

It's been made offical today that the forthcoming Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta will be for US residents only. It comes as a big disappointment to fans outside the United States.

It's currently unknown why the beta will be US only and it's especially confusing since the recent Halo 3 beta was available worldwide. Infinity Ward have said of Call of Duty 4 that they "hope it is the best multiplayer experience of the year".

Arghh, my favourite game, Forza 2. I've had problems playing this on my console since day one, textures disapearing in the middle of races, screen freezing and nearly everytime getting the "Disk Unreadable" message. It has gotten so bad now that the game refuses to load past the Turn10 intro screen. After taking the disk out the console to give it a wipe I noticed there is a circle scratch on it. This is the console scratching the disk not me, I take very good care of my games, and Forza 2 has barely left my console since i bought it. Microsoft want nothing to do with this error they wont replace it and my console isnt under warrenty anymore so off to Gamestation i go to try get my game disk cleaned professionaly.

Nintendo may be slow to get a Wii version of Pilotwings off the ground, but those looking to get ready for that inevitability may want to pick up the latest Wiicessory from PEGO, which will turn your humble Wiimote and nunchuck into a makeshift flight stick. Of course, there aren't exactly a whole lot of games at the moment that'll let you take full advantage of the setup, but it will only set you back $13, and it would seem to offer some potential for those looking for some new uses for their Wiimote on their PC.
The BBC’s smash hit TV show Doctor Who will receive its own videogame this year, according to Gallifreyone.com.

According to the site, an advert for the game appeared in the latest set of Doctor Who Top Trumps, and while the platforms it will appear on remain unknown, we do know that it will be available in the shops in time for Christmas.

Since being revived in 2005, Doctor Who has proven to be one of the most popular shows on UK terrestrial television, so the news that a game is en route shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.

Putting an end to much speculation, Rockstar has revealed it is working on a Wii version of last year's Xbox 360 hit, Table Tennis.

According to the developer, Rockstar presents Table Tennis (to give it its full title) will be the "perfect Wii gaming experience", claiming that gamers will be able to "feel the unmatched speed and intensity of the real-life sport with an authentic physics engine and intuitive gameplay that mimics the exhilarating experience found in international competition."

Sold.

"Ever since we released Table Tennis, fans have been asking us to create a Wii version," Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games, said in a statement.

"By bringing Table Tennis to the Wii and utilizing the motion-sensitive Wii Remote, a new audience can now experience a game that is beautifully designed and impossible to put down."

Table Tennis on Wii is due this autumn.

Germany’s USK board has implied that a demo of Bioshock is due very soon. The actual demo itself has been rated as an 18 although the USK website doesn’t specify exactly when the demo will be available on the marketplace.
